The Science of Wine is one of Southern Oregon’s premier wine events and the largest annual fundraiser for ScienceWorks Hands-On Museum. Revenue and sponsorships help fund the award-winning, nonprofit museum’s on-site science education and outreach programs that serve 12,000 schoolchildren and educators in Southern Oregon and Northern California each year.
Unique wine events planned for the weekend are designed to add to everyone’s appreciation of the region's growing wine reputation and complement visitors’ theater and nature plans.
Thursday, May 5: Vine Dining - A showcase of Southern Oregon Wines & Winemakers (Dinner and Auction): Winemakers honored at the World of Wine Festival will share their techniques during an elegant, sit-down dinner at the Ashland Springs Hotel. Gold & Silver Medal winners and Best of Show wines from Abacela, Crater Lake Cellars, Daisy Creek, Del Rio, Hellgate Cellars, RoxyAnn and Troon will be expertly paired with appetizers from Amuse, Chateaulin and The Winchester Inn followed by four courses prepared by the chefs from Larks Home Kitchen Cuisine. A lively, wine-themed auction presented by JPR’s Geoffrey Riley and auctioneer Steve Wall will include a week-long, December stay in Cabo’s La Hacienda del Mar’s presidential suite (valued at $10,000). Tickets: $75 member, $85 non-members.
Friday, May 6: The Art and Science of Wine Making, Wine Aging and Wine Tasting
Learn about the secrets of a successful winery by taking part in one of two interactive talks at ScienceWorks’ museum. Phil Burton of Barrel Builders, Inc. in Calistoga/Napa will demonstrate, from start to finish, how a barrel is made and his co-host, RoxyAnn Winery’s winemaker John Quinones, will share and discuss various barrel samples. Special guest, Dwayne Bershaw, Associate Director at the Southern Oregon Wine Institute in Roseburg, will guide participants as they sample wines and learn the basics in the Wine-Tasting 101 program. Admission to either program includes a wine and food reception as well as wine samples. Seating is very limited. Tickets: $15 members, $20 non-members.
